Abstract
202,435. Barnes, J. W. May 26, 1922. Elastic-diaphragm pressure gauges.-Comprises a method of or means for eliminating hysteresis or lag in fluid-pressure measuring instruments and consists in coupling a plurality of resilient chambers together in such manner that one or more controls the pressure applied to others and the hysteresis occurs in opposite directions, the indicating means being connected to a point in the system which moves positively for changes of pressure, but does not move for change of hysteresis. The invention is described as applied to an altimeter for air-craft. Two similar aneroid chambers 1, 2 are mounted on a base 3. A spring 6 having a fulcrum on a knife-edge 7 on a wedge-piece 8 engages at the ends under knife edges 5, 4 carried by the chambers 1, 2, the position of the fulcrum 7 is such that the spring exerts unequal efforts on the two chambers. A lever 9 rests at one end on the chamber 2 by means of a knife-edge 11 and at the other end by means of a roller 10 on the chamber 1. Due to hysteresis or lag only, the lever 9 tends to turn about a point such as 13, while due to variations in pressure only, the lever 9 tends to turn about some point to the left of the point 13. The indicating means are thus actuated from the point 13 which has no movement due to lag, and the mechanism comprises a lever 14, a linkage 16, and chain operating a pointer 17. The position of the point 13 is determined by trial.
