Abstract
The clay extrusion (2) is horizontally displaced, by a conveying means (10), transversely to its longitudinal direction from a support means (3) to a support means (4), initially to a stationary position in which a row (6) of shaping rolls (8) arranged between the supports (3, 4) are vertically moved between a first lower and a second upper position, to form grooves on a leading side (14) of the extrusion. The horizontal displacement of the extrusion (2) is then continued onto the support means (4) as the rolls (8), in their second upper position, form grooves on the top side (15) of the extrusion (2), and grooves are then formed on the trailing side (17) of the extrusion (2) as it is stationary on the support 4, during movement of the rolls (8) from their second upper to their first lower position. A control device is coupled to the conveying means (10) to stop the extrusion with its leading or trailing side at the row (6) of rolls. A lower row (7) of the rolls may be provided, to form grooves on the lower side (16) of the extrusion (2) as it is horizontally displaced between the supports (3) and (4). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for making grooves on a clay extrusion
The invention relates to a device for making elongate grooves on a clay extrusion transversely to its longitudinal direction by means of a row of profile rolls relative to which the extrusion is moved.
A device of the above-mentioned type is known, for example from US-PS 3,461,196.
In this device two rows of profile rolls are arranged in a frame, the frame being a cutting frame with cutting wires. The cutting frame is arranged fixedly above a lifting table at such a height that the clay extrusion pushed from a supporting table by means of a slide transversely to the lifting table is grooved on its topside by means of a first row of profile rolls.
The clay extrusion must then be positioned exactly beneath the cutting frame. When the lifting table is raised and the clay extrusion moved through the cutting frame, the two rows of profile rolls groove the front side and rear side of the clay extrusion. When the lifting table has reached its upper position lying above the cutting frame, a further slide serves to push the clay extrusion transversely to its longitudinal direction off the lifting table onto a discharge conveyor. Apart from the fact that two rows of profile rolls are required to profile three sides of the clay extrusion and the underside cannot be profiled, the device has a very complicated construction. Thus, three conveying mechanisms, that is two slides and one lifting table, and, to align the clay extrusion on the lifting table, a further extensible slide are necessary, the latter serving as a stop for the clay extrusion to be placed on the lifting table.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned type which not only allows profiling of the clay extrusion on three sides by means of a single row of profile rolls, but also has an especially simple construction.
According to the invention, there is provided a device for making elongate grooves on a clay extrusion having a rectangular crosssection transversly to its longitudinal direction, comprising a conveying mechanism for the controlled horizontal movement of the clay extrusion transversely to its longitudinal direction; a row of profile rolls arranged between two supports for the clay extrusion, the rolls being vertically movable between a first position and a second position, whereby in use the row of profile rolls forms grooves on a front side of the clay extrusion during movement of the row of profile rolls from the first position to the second position, forms grooves on the top side of said clay extrusion in the second position during horizontal movement of the clay extrusion under the row of profile rolls, and forms grooves on the rear side of said clay extrusion during movement of the row of profile rolls from the second position to the first position; and a control device coupled to the conveying mechanism to stop the clay extrusion with its front side or rear side at the row of profile rolls.
There is thus provided a particularly simple device, since three sides of the clay extrusion are profiled with one row of profile rolls and a change of the direction of movement of the clay extrusion is not required. Consequently, a single conveying mechanism in one direction of movement of the clay extrusion is sufficient.
The device preferably comprises a second row of profile rolls for profiling the underside of the clay extrusion at the same time as the top side.
The conveying mechanism may consist, for example in that the Supports for the clay extrusion between which the frame is arranged are designed as conveying mechanisms, for example conveyor belts or conveyor rollers. It is, however, advantageous for the conveying mechanism to comprise a member adapted to engage the rear side of the clay extrusion, since this allows a uniform application of force.
The device according to the invention may be arranged upstream of a cutting device with which the clay extrusion is cut along the grooves.
An exemplary embodiment of a device according to the invention is described in detail hereinafter by reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figures 1 to 5 are schematic side views of the device in different working phases; and
Figure 6 is a cutaway plan view of the device in the position shown in Figs. 5.
The Figs. show a device for making elongate grooves 1 in a clay extrusion 2 transversely to its longitudinal direction. For this purpose, the device comprises a first support 3 and a second support 4 for the clay extrusion 2, there being arranged between the supports a frame 5 which has two rows 6 and 7 of profile rolls 8. The frame is movable by means of a drive mechanism 9 out of a first position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 into a second position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and back again into the first position shown in Fig. 5. A conveying mechanism 10 serves for the controlled movement of the clay extrusion 2 from the first support 3 through the frame 5 onto the second support 4, as is explained in detail hereinafter. A control device, not shown in detail, which has, for example mechanical or electro-optical limit switches serves to control the movement of the conveying mechanism.
The supports 3 and 4 may be simple tables over which the clay extrusion slides. In the exemplary embodiment shown the first support 3 comprises a plurality of rollers 11 aligned parallel to the longitudinal direction of the clay extrusion. The second support 4 comprises a conveyor belt 1 2.
The conveying mechanism 10 consists of a slide 1 3 which is extensible and retractable transversly to the longitudinal direction of the clay extrusion 2. A piston/cylinder unit, a crank or eccentric gear, or a spindle drive may serve to drive the slide.
The device functions as follows.
The clay extrusion 2 (Fig. 1 ) arriving on the first support 3 is conveyed by means of the conveying mechanism 10 firstly transversely to its longitudinal direction until the front side 14 of the clay extrusion enters the range of action of the upper row 6 of profile rolls 8. In so doing, the frame 5 of the profile rolls 8 is still situated in its first position (Fig. 2). The frame 5 is not moved, that is raised into its second position, whereby the upper row 6 of profile rolls 8 profiles the front side 14 of the clay extrusion. In the second position of the frame 5 (Fig. 3) the first row 6 and the second row 7 of profile rolls assume a position in which they stand opposite the topside 1 5 and the bottomside 1 6 respectively of the clay extrusion 2.The conveying mechanism 10 now moves the clay extrustion 2 through the frame 5 onto the second support 4, whereby the upper row 6 and the lower row 7 of the profile rolls profile the topside 1 5 and the bottomside 1 6 respectively of the clay extrusion 2. The clay extrusion 2 is stopped in a position in which the upper row 6 of profile rolls 8 can interact with the rear side 1 7 of the clay extrusion 2 (Fig. 4). The slide 1 3 of the conveying mechanism 10 is now withdrawn and the frame 5 is moved back into its first position, whereby the upper row 6 of the profile rolls 8 profiles the rearside 1 7 of the clay extrusion 2 (Fig. 5). Further transport of the clay extrusion thus profiled may effected either by a drive of the conveyor belt 1 2 or by a following clay extrusion which pushes in front of it the already profiled clay extrusion.
