Abstract

Apparatus for compressing and/or expanding a gas comprises an inner gear a, a surrounding outer gear c, the gears being arranged eccentrically and for relative rotation and having teeth which, together with radially extending end-closure members d, define working-fluid spaces with volumes which change on relative rotation of the gears and reach a minimum at a position in which the mutual engagement of the teeth is at a maximum, a discharge port e for compressed or expanded gas or for each of the compressed and expanded gases, and a generally annular resilient sealing member b (preferably formed with longitudinal corrugations) interposed between the inner and outer gears. In a preferred embodiment the teeth are helical and thus the gas passes between the teeth in an axial direction, Fig. 2 (not shown). The apparatus may be comprised in a heat engine or a heat pump, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). <IMAGE>
