Abstract

An apparatus for controlling the light output of a discharge lamp 1 comprises an inductance coil 2 provided with two taps 13 and 14, a switch 11 and a resistor 24 connected to the tap 13. The two taps 13 and 14 allow two different impedances to be connected in series with the lamp 1 and hence enable two levels of light output. The resistor allows a small current to flow through the lamp if the switch 11 is positioned between the taps 13 and 14 so that the discharge of the lamp can be maintained with the minimum power consumption. <IMAGE>
