Abstract
202,193. Ostrovsky, H. Sept. 22, 1922. Stringed instruments, bows for.-The connection between the hairs and the stick is capable of elastic movement when pressure is applied to the hairs in playing. At the head of the bow the hairs are passed through a hole in a plate p, Fig. 12, and glued into a tube q projecting therefrom, the plate being held in a recess in the head of the bow by turning a nut r on the tube q. Or the hairs may be passed through a keyhole slot in a plate r<1>, Fig. 20, the slot then being closed and the plate being held in the recess by turning a nut u<1> on a screw t<1>. At the butt end of the bow, the hairs are inserted in one of several holes d, Fig. 2, and held by a stopper j, which may also take the form of a tube surrounding the ends of the hairs. The hairs lie in a channel k, and are covered by a slide l which adjustably supports an L-shaped spring plate f, secured by a screw i. At its forward end the spring plate f is formed with a D-shaped ring g, the hairs being pressed against the flat upper part of the ring by a plate m adjustable, by a nut o on a screw n within the ring q. The plate w may be extended forwards on a support for the hairs. In a modification, Fig. 14, the frog is in two parts hinged together at z with a spring b<1> tending to separate them. The extent of separation is controlled by the head of a screw o<1>, and the extent of depression of the part u of the frog by a nut q<1>. The channel in which the hairs lie is covered by a slide k<1> carrying a D-shaped ring l<1>, within which a wedge n' is inserted, the slide and ring being secured to the part u of the frog by a screw m<1>.
