Abstract

A method of producing cast iron by a melting process such as a cupola melting process which includes the steps of passing the liquid iron as a spray of molten droplets through a vacuum chamber maintained at a pressure of up to 1 mm., the ingoing metal having a sulphur content at least approximately equivalent by weight to the percentage of tin desired or intended to be removed. The preferred S content of the iron before treatment is 0.08-0.15%, and the C content should be relatively high, e.g. 3.4-4.5%.
