Abstract

The invention relates to apparatus and method for forming a sheet molding compound. The sheet molding compound 81 is linearly advanced. Moveable upper and lower surfaces formed by belts 125, 115 passing around a series of driven rollers 111, 107 are adapted to contact the upper and lower surfaces of the sheet molding compound. The belts are held in biased relationship to the sheet molding compound by the rollers. In one arrangement of the invention, the sheet molding compound is caused to undulate vertically while retained in compression to induce one form of shear effect. In still another embodiment, as the molding compound is passed in vertically undulating fashion between the belts, one of the belts is driven at a fixed rate, while the opposite is driven at rates oscillating above and below the fixed rate. The belts may be of wire mesh. <IMAGE>
