Abstract

An energy absorber utilises an energy absorbing element 12 of composite material disposed in force transmitting relation between an anvil 14 disposed at one end and structure 16 for applying a force to the opposite end. The element is progressively crushed onto the anvil by the force applying structure to dissipate energy. The energy absorbing element is preferably a tube of fibre-reinforced plastics e.g. graphite, boron or fibreglass in epoxy resin. The fibres may be at selected angles with respect to the tube axis. The element may be of closed or open section of various shapes. The energy absorber is used in energy absorbing seats, landing gear mechanisms and vehicle bumper systems. <IMAGE>
