Abstract

A scroll in the stationary housing 2 of a rotary mechanical face seal for inducing axial flow of a cooling fluid along the seal 3, 5 as a result of rotation of the fluid induced by the adjacent rotating parts of the seal is formed by a separate inserted coil spring 6 or other helical body, preferably of rectangular cross-section, and it can be initially over-size, so as to be held in place by its own resilience. <IMAGE>
