Abstract

A liquid crystal display having extremely narrow electrode connections 66 between the character segments 62 and the termination pads 64 to eliminate backplane patterning and alleviate the critical alignment between the opposing electrodes on the two plates. The extremely narrow preferably multiple leads 66 are made by a photolithographic technique whereby their widths can be made invisible to the eye. In one embodiment the extremely narrow leads are long enough between the segments and the pads to greatly simplify the electrode configuration on the opposing plate. The technique permits the segment electrodes to be very close together in each character to appear as an unbroken line when activated. <IMAGE>
