Abstract

Process for the production of liquid whey concentrates having good handling properties from natural or partially concentrated wheys having a dry matter content of not more than 60 percent comprises mixing the whey with a non-protein nitrogenous compound (mixer 1) and thereafter concentrating the whey by subjecting it to an evaporation technique to remove water (evaporators 3 and 5) to give a liquid concentrate most suitably having a dry matter content of at least 80 percent by weight and either during or subsequently to the application of the evaporation technique subjecting the mixture to reaction conditions which effect the condensation of the non-protein nitrogenous compound with the sugar present in the mixture (reactor 7). The preferred non-protein nitrogenous compound is urea. The liquid whey concentrates can be used as a feedstuff for animals. <IMAGE>
