Abstract

201,896. Oehmichen, E. Aug. 5, 1922, [Convention date]. Helicopters; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude; propelling.-A helicopter is provided with a number of auxiliary propellers E<1>, E<2>, E<3>, E<4> having blades which are variable and reversible in incidence by means of connections to a single control element to enable the inclination of the machine and the speed of ascent and descent to be regulated. The same element may also control the orientation of the machine by acting upon auxiliary propellers E<1>1, E<1>2 or deflecting surfaces such as d<1>1, d<1>2. The auxiliary propellers are driven from the main engine or from a separate engine. The control element comprises a tube T ball jointed at S and carrying upper and lower pulleys over which cords from the various auxiliary propellers E<1> - - E<4> are passed. The ends of the cords are connected to a block which can be moved up and down in the tube by a rod t to enable the incidence of all four auxiliary propellers to be increased or decreased simultaneously. Inclination of the tube effects a differential adjustment of the propellers to control the tilting of the machine. The tube T may also carry a pair of arms B', B<2> having their ends in alignment with the ball joint S and! connected by cords d<1>, d<2> to steering-propellers E<1>1, E<1>2, or to deflecting- surfaces d<1>, d<2> arranged below the main or auxiliary propellers or behind the tractor propeller. These arms are connected to a quadrant rotatable on the tube T and geared through a counter-shaft a to a pinion c which is slidably connected to a fork on a hand wheel V rotatably mounted on the rod t. The auxiliary propeliers are shown arranged in equal pairs but they may be of unequal size arranged at different distances, or a single propeller at one side of the machine may be balanced against two or more smaller propellers at the other side. The devices for controlling the steering elements may be separate from the lever for controlling the lift and balance of the machine,
