Abstract

201,822. Vallez, H. A. Oct. 26, 1922. Rotary filters.-In a process for coating rotary filtering-frames with a paper pulp mixture, the washed pulp is mixed with clear filtered or unfiltered liquids and is circulated through the filter under pressure until a coating of the desired thickness is obtained. After use, the coating is removed and returned to the wash tank. The pulp is boiled and soaked in a tank 16, and after draining is mixed with clear liquid in a tank 17. A pump 21 serves to force the mixture through the pipes 19, 20, 22 to a pipe 23, fitted with branches 23<a> which communicate with the filter 1. Tha mixture filters through the rotating frames 5, which comprise spaced screens 7, 8, Fig. 5. Pulp is deposited on the faces of the screens, and the liquid is returned by the hollow shaft 6 and pipe 27 to the tank 17. The pulp in the tank 17 may be mixed with clear water, in which case the water remaining in the frames may be forced out by compressed air before filtration begins. The liquid to be filtered is pumped from the tank 31 through pipes 22, 23, 23<a> into the filter, and the filtered liquid passes off through the pipe 32. To prevent caking of the deposit on the frames, a little pulp is added during the filtering process. When the filter requires cleansing the supply from the tank 31 is cut off, and the liquid in the filter is returned through the pipe 33 to the tank 31. The filter is flushed with water from the pipe 25, and the water issues through the pipe 35. Finally the filter is half filled with water, compressed air and steam are supplied from the valves 14, 15 and a perforated pipe 13, and water and compressed air are supplied from the valves 11, 12 and the spray-pipe 10, whereby the pulp and sediment are disintegrated and held in suspension in the water. The mixture is now forced back to the tank 16 through the pipe 34, to be washed preparatory to further use. A pipe 39 is provided to withdraw water used to wash the filter.
