Abstract

A hull for a boat is provided at the deepest point of its underside with a transverse slot, communicating with the air above the waterline. The portion of the hull immediately forward of the slot lies deeper in the water than the portion immediately aft of the slot and the forward portion is so shaped that at a predetermined rate of forward movement through the water air is induced at atmospheric pressure to the slot and streams out from the slot between the underside of the after portion and the water, thereby reducing drag. As described, the after portion may be covered with a fabric having a pile or nap of sheet water repellant fibres for holding the air layer. <IMAGE>
