Abstract

In a process for imparting a yellow colour to glass headlamp light- transmitting covers, a colorant material containing a silver salt preferably 2% to 20% of the dry weight of the material in the form of silver chloride is applied and the glass heated to exchange silver ions with alkali metal ions in the glass, the silver ions diffusing into the surface with a resulting colouring of the surface. The material is applied as a paste or slurry onto the cover surface to be coloured and the cover is heated to a temperature below the softening point of the glass, the temperature level and period over which it is maintained controlling the degree of colouring.
