Abstract

The Specification discloses cis or trans-1,5-benzo-thiazepine compounds of the formula (I): <IMAGE> wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group or an alkoxy group and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or a hydroxyalkyl group and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts and quaternary ammonium salts thereof which exhibit anticholinergic activity and are useful as anti-ulcer, gastric secretion inhibiting and anti- spasmodic agents in mammals. The compounds (I) are prepared by a route involving a novel class of intermediates of the formula (I) except in that the substituent in the 3-position is a hydroxymethyl group.
