Abstract

Stained glass panels are manufactured by forming in the surface 2 of a non-stick support 1 hollow impressions or cavities 3, filling one or more of such impressions or cavities with particles of glass 4, laying a glass sheet 5 over the thus-filled support to form an assembly, heating the said assembly to a glass- softening temperature for a length of time whereby the particulate glass softens so that the said particles of glass embed onto the said glass sheet 5, and cooling the assembly whereby the said glass particles are permanently embedded on the said glass sheet, and removing the said support from the said assembly. Double panels may be formed by placing a second sheet of glass over the surface of the glass having the glass particles embedded thereon, the second sheet of glass being fixed to a peripheral lip on the first sheet of glass; or by casting a sheet of glass over the surface of the glass sheet having the glass particles embedded thereon. In a modification of the process one or more impressions or cavities contained in a first glass sheet is/ are filled with particles of glass, optionally so that they are heaped to project above the surface of the glass sheet, and a second glass sheet is placed over or cast on the first glass sheet so as to cover the glass particles embedded thereon. <IMAGE>
