Abstract

There is disclosed a method of all-position welding a full penetration, root or complete, weld bead between components (particularly tubular), without the use of filler metal, by traversing a non-consumable electrode, e.g. thoriated tungsten, over the components. A direct arc current which is pulsed is used. The shielding gas is helium or a mixture of two or more of the gases helium, hydrogen and argon in which helium is a major ingredient or in which hydrogen is a minor ingredient. The components at the butting weld faces have a thickness of no greater than 3 mm. Example component materials are stainless and carbon steels, titanium, nickel and nickel-copper alloys and aluminium bronze. The resultant weld bead 11 has a back face 12 which is flush with or slightly proud of the adjacent surfaces of the components instead of forming a shallow depression as can form when using prior methods for all positional welding. Welding of tubular components may be effected externally or internally. In external orbital welding, a gas backing, e.g. of helium, argon or a mixture thereof, may be provided. <IMAGE>
