Abstract

In a jig washbox, an agglomeration of solids of different specific gravities is deposited into a bath containing liquid and as a result of a jigging action in the liquid, the lighter materials remain near to the surface and are discharged together with some of the liquid over a weir whilst the heavier solids sink and are fed to one or more discharge zones. The heavier solids are withdrawn from a sump (20) at the base of the washbox, which is in communication therewith, by a pump (23) which forces the solids entrained in a stream of the liquid from the sump through a pipe (24) to a remote station for separation of the entrained solids, and returns the separated liquid via a pipe (25) to the inlet of the pump. Several pumps may be provided which communicate with, and withdraw solids from, different parts of the washbox. <IMAGE>
