Abstract

Reaction chambers 2 and 4, each have a window, aligned with which are branched ends 50 of a Y-shaped bundle 52 of optical fibres whose other ends 54 supply photomultiplier tube 56, which may thus be remotely situated and thereby protected from heat needed to remove moisture etc or to promote the reaction. In determining nitrogen dioxide in a mixture with nitric oxide, the mixture is supplied via lines 16, 18, the former including catalytic converter 24. Ozone is supplied via inlets 12. Chopper 48 provides for a difference signal from the detector, and may include a section permitting dark current measurement for drift correction. Hydrogen sulphide may be measured. The chopper may alternatively be adjacent the detector, Fig. 3 (not shown). A single chamber, single light guide arrangement Fig. 2 (not shown) uses a photodiode as detector. Filters may be provided and may form the windows or chopper elements. <IMAGE>
