Abstract

A belt-drive mechanism comprises a driven pulley 10 mounted on a fixed axle 14 and a driving pulley 11 and an intermediate idler pulley 12 each mounted on axes 15, 16 which are movable relative to the driven pulley. A high tension belt 19 encompasses the driven and driving pulleys and is tensioned to about one third of its ultimate tensile strength ie far in excess of that used in conventional belt drives. The tension pulls the driving pulley and the idler pulley hard against each other and against the driven pulley such that a rotational input to the driving pulley is applied to the driven pulley in part by the frictional drive of the pulley train and in part by the frictional belt drive. The provision of the floating axles for the driving and idler pulleys ensures that none of the belt loading is applied to the axle of the driven pulley or the structure in which it is mounted. <IMAGE>
