Abstract

A method of providing lubrication between surfaces by applying layers of lubricant on a substrate 1, a first of the layers 3 being rigidly bonded to the substrate and a subsequent layer 4 being non-rigidly bonded to an adjacent layer so that two surfaces thus treated and facing one another have between them rigid lubricant layers and an intermediate non-rigid layer, thereby reducing the friction on relative movement of the surfaces. The dry lubricant is preferably PTFE, Molybdenum disulphide or graphite. The substrate is preferably of metal and may be provided with phosphate coating 2, prior to receiving the first layer of dry lubricant. The dry lubricant may be applied suspended in a suitable resin which is dissolved in a volatile solvent. The solvent is then driven off and the resin cured to provided the rigidly bonded layer and a layer of loose dry lubricant is then applied. <IMAGE>
