Abstract
A thrust bearing for a rotor has one of the bearing members axially displaceable, with respect to the centre of the rotor, by fluid pressure generated by rotation of the rotor. The rotor 1 has a spigot 33 carrying a ball 3 which rests on a seating surface 5 in a bearing block 7. Upon rotation of the rotor 1 lubricating liquid 25 is pumped by grooves in on the surface of the ball 3 into space 41 and thence to space 42 below a diaphragm 36. The spigot 33 is thereby displaced towards the rotor body against a spring to a limiting stop 38. This shortens the rotor and lifts the ball 3 from the bearing surface 5. In alternative constructions the pressure generated tends to force the spigot outwards from the rotor (fig. 4, not shown) or pressure in the space below the bearing block lifts the block (fig. 1, not shown), in each case to compensate shortening of the rotor when rotating at high speed. In a further construction (fig. 2, not shown) the pressure causing the displacement of the bearing member is produced solely by centrifugal action when the rotor rotates. The bearing may be used in high speed centrifuges to compensate for variations in the length of the rotor when it rotates at high speed. Alternatively the bearing may be used where bearing support may be dispensed with when the rotor is running at speed. <IMAGE>
