Abstract

To enhance the quality and feel of woven and knitted fabrics (2), these fabrics (2) after a heat treatment are first dampened and then subjected to an extremely cold fluid coolant such as liquid nitrogen spray. The resultant sudden cooling causes the added moisture to be frozen into the fibre structure of the fabric (2). Apparatus for effecting the method comprises a dampening chamber (3) and a cooling chamber (4) through which the fabric is successively moved by a conveyor belt (1), Fig. 1, or by separate belts. Coolant is sprayed onto the fabric through nozzles (5) located in the cooling chamber (4) and a lower suction box (7) may be provided. Circulation of the coolant fluid (6) is assisted by fans (8) and, after the fluid has exhausted its cooling effect on the fabric (2), it is removed by an extractor fan (9). <IMAGE>
