Abstract

Packeting foodstuffs &c. in cartons; paper and like bags, folding down mouths of after filling.- Relates to the packing of foodstuffs in paper bags held in shape and size by temporary reinforcement during filling and sealing, and consists in removing the bags after sealing from the reinforcement by gripping devices and placing them in cartons. The bags 1, preferably of waxed paper, are delivered by a shoot 3 to a temporary container 2 which protects their walls from bulging during the filling and sealing operation. The containers are mounted upon a conveyer 4 and the bags are carried in succession beneath a filling shoot 6, folding arms 7 which make a bellows fold in the sides of the bag, and closing and sealing mechanism. The mouth of the bag is closed by oscillating heated members 8 which bring the sides of the bag together and melt the wax, and at the next stage rollers 9, maintained at a relatively low-temperature, seal the fold. Tongs 11 then grip the sealed flap of the bag, withdraw it from the temporary container and insert it into a carton, which is closed in any suitable manner.
