Abstract

Spent grains (brewers' grains) are treated with an alkali to render them more digestible to animals, particularly to ruminants. Caustic soda is a suitable alkali and may be added in solid form or in solution. Treatment should last at least for one hour. The weight of caustic soda added may be between 5% and 10% of the dry weight of the grains. It is normally unnecessary to neutralise the alkali if the treated grains are to be used without delay; but if the treated grains are to be ensiled or otherwise stored it is preferable to neutralise the alkali with a mineral acid such as sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid.
