Abstract

Insertion of a video disc caddy 50, Figs. 4, 5, via a slot 24 and guides 42, 44 onto a pivoted platform 34 in a raised position thereof, shifts a pickup carriage 104 to a start position and actuates latching arms 70, 72 to engage a spine 60 of a record retaining member 54 so that disc 58 is retained in the player on withdrawal of caddy jacket 52, carriage 104 being movable in a direction parallel to the disc insertion/withdrawal direction. A lever 250 is then pivoted to lower platform 34 for engaging disc 58 with turntable 26 which drives a belt 130 to advance carriage 104 radially. Belt 130 is clamped to carriage 104 by a mechanical toggle switch 134 which can be operated by a button 226 to free belt 130 from carriage 104 in a pause mode, or by a button 228 to clamp carriage 104 to a belt 132 in a search mode in which carriage 104 can be moved in or out or held stationary under the control of a thumb wheel 160 rotatable to drive belt 132. When platform 34 is raised to the load/unload position, switch 134 is automatically moved to the pause position to allow free movement of carriage 104 to the start position by means of an inserted jacket 52. <IMAGE>
