Abstract

A video disc player stylus is lifted or lowered in relation to a carriage 104 used to carry the stylus horizontally by using a two-position thumbwheel 252. Normal playback drives carriage 104 radially of the turntable 26 in one direction in synchronism with its rotations. For search or special effects operation the stylus remains lowered but the radial movement of carriage 104 is now manually controllable in either direction using another thumbwheel 160. A three-position toggle switch 134 couples the carriage either to a search/special effects belt 132 manually rotated by thumbwheel 160, or to a normal drive belt 130, or the toggle switch can disengage the carriage from either belt. An alternative uses a permanently engaged special effects thumbwheel, and a clutch engaged normal playback motor, so that the special effects thumbwheel rotates during normal playback and indicates which part of a record is playing at any moment. <IMAGE>
