Abstract

In an electric alarm clock in which an alarm set hand (not shown) attached to an alarm set gear and sleeve 40, 41 is used in a conventional manner to set the alarm time, the alarm set gear being provided e.g. with pegs 43 which locate in corresponding apertures 44 in an hour gear 37 once per revolution of the hour gear, the hour gear 37 is biassed towards the alarm set gear 40 by virtue of the action of a leaf spring 45 acting on the end of a shaft 15. The leftwards bias imparted on the shaft 15 is transferred via gear combination 25/26, which is a friction fit on shaft 15, through gears 32/34 to the hour gear 37, thus resulting in a particularly simple construction. The leaf spring 45 also acts as an electric switch contact, energising an audible alarm (not shown) when the shaft 15 moves leftwards. As shown, all the gears in the gear train are mounted on just two shafts, 14 and 15. The clock is driven by a stepping motor having its rotor 22 freely mounted on the shaft 14 and whose stator coil 18 receives pulses derived from a quartz crystal on circuit board 13. <IMAGE>
