Abstract

A method of injection moulding plastics materials primarily from the family of polyolefins and particularly polyethylene, polypropylene, linear polyethylene, copolymers, and styrene, includes the step of forcing a molten plastics material through a breaker plate 12 and a fine screen 13 immediately upstream of an injection nozzle 10. This step aids the uniform dispersion of colour in the plastics material and helps to eliminate the inclusion or optically (human) observable black particles, such as carbonized pieces of the plastics material or other ingredients in the moulded product. A nozzle assembly for use with an injection moulding apparatus in performing such a method consists essentially of an injection nozzle 10, and a screen pack retainer 11 adapted to be connected to a source of molten plastics material and to which the nozzle is secured, the breaker plate 12, the fine screen 13 and if desired an additional breaker plate 14 being clamped between the nozzle and retainer so as to lie in the path of the molten plastics material. Apertures in the breaker plate or plates are larger than the openings in the fine screen, the fine screen comprising either a single fine screen or a screen pack of several fine mesh screens which may if appropriate be of varying mesh sizes. <IMAGE>
