Abstract
A method of determining the unknown drift of a gyro of a system for determining the position of a vehicle, involves the taking of a dead reckoning measurement to establish a position PD which is subject to error due to the unknown drift D and an additional dead reckoning measurement with a predetermined drift value DK to establish a position PK. The unknown drift D is determined from the coordinates of the true position PS and the positions PK and PD. The invention also includes a navigation apparatus for determining the position of a vehicle which comprises a directional gyro and means for generating a predetermined drift value employing which the method to determine the gyro drift. <IMAGE>
