Abstract
A mould 101, 102, for thermosetting plastics materials, having a cold channel insert 104 maintained at a lower temperature than the plastics hardening temperature of the mould cavity or cavities 115, so that material remains fluid in an insert channel or channels 105, 106 leading towards the cavity or cavities 115, has a passage 116 extending substantially in the mould separation plane and leading to the cavity from a channel mouth 107 which is surrounded by walls of the cold channel insert 104 and is at right angles or inclined to the direction A of mould opening. Consequently waste of material and blocking of the insert channel by hardened material is avoided, the hardened gating material in the passage 116 being easily separable from the moulding, as by an ejector 118, 119 on mould opening, and any hardened material at the channel mouth 107 forming part of and being removable with the gating. The mould insert 104 may be located wholly in the stationary mould half 101 as shown or partly in each of the mould halves (Fig. 2 not shown). Heat transfer is reduced by the use of grooves 112 on the insert 104. <IMAGE>
