Abstract

Grain loss in combine harvesters is reduced by monitoring the distribution of crop material over the grain cleaning mechanism by means of sensors and taking corrective action when the distribution is unfavourable by adjusting one or more components of the combine which affect said crop distribution. Temperature-sensitive devices are provided on the louvres (23) of the chaffer sieve (7) of the grain cleaning mechanism and the output signals of the devices are applied to a control circuit (46) which produces a command signal which can be used to control the speed of a fan (9) of the cleaning mechanism or to adjust the position of baffles (10, 12) in the fan outlet duct (11). The sensors may be thermistors, hot wire devices, air pressure sensors, directional vanes, mass detection devices or electro-optical or acoustic devices. <IMAGE>
