Abstract
In the manufacture of an optical fibre cable, or a unit for incorporation in a cable, consisting of one or more optical fibres surrounded by a loosely fitting tube, by extruding the tube around the fibre or fibres and winding the assembly on to a drum, longitudinal relaxation of the fibre or fibres within the tube is achieved by rotating a drum on which the assembly is wound, while at least one end of the fibre or each fibre has freedom of movement. Relaxation of the fibres occurs as a result of oscillation and slippage of the fibres within the tube, causing the fibres to retract from the free end or ends of the tube: to enable slippage to take place, the friction between the fibres and tube must be low, and the drum is rotated slowly.
