Abstract

201,388. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). July 14, 1922. Protective arrangements. - A lightning arrester comprises a series of spark-gaps, a resistance in shunt to the middle portion of the gaps, and a low potential conductor arranged adjacent to the lower unshunted gaps and to the shunted gaps. The resistance is in the form of a rod upon which the sparkgap electrodes are threaded, and the low potential conductor is in the form of a cylinder arranged between an insulating sleeve and the casing. Three unshunted gaps 14, 15, 16, a series of gaps 17 - - 24 shunted by a carbon rod 33 and unshunted gaps 25, 26, 27 are placed between terminal plates 41 and 46. Interposed between the porcelain tube 10 and a mica lining 49 is a low potential conductor 40 which extends to the gap 17. The electrodes of the gaps 17 - - 24 have flat central portions and conical discharge portions, and these electrodes are separated from the rod 33 by means of porcelain rings 35.
