Abstract

In a twin tube telescopic hydraulic shock absorber wherein the annular space 14 between the inner pressure tube 10 and the concentric outer tube 12 constitutes a reservoir for hydraulic fluid and the reservoir 14 additionally is required to contain a charge of pressure gas, a seal housing 32 is seam welded to the reservoir tube 12 and extends axially beyond the ends of the tubes 10 and 12 to define a hydraulic fluid cavity 42 within which is arranged a piston rod seal 38 spring biased against a radial flange 36 of the housing 32. At its inner axial end, the seal 38 has a lip 52 which yields on the application of external gas pressure to admit pressure gas to the shock absorber interior whilst an annular shroud 46 fitting closely around the pressure tube 10 depends from the seal housing 32 to define a narrow annular passage 44 by which the fluid cavity 42 is connected to the reservoir space 14 and maintained filled with hydraulic fluid. <IMAGE>
