Abstract
A rotating flyer (8) winds wire (10) onto a slotted armature core (4), the wire at the beginning and end of the coil winding process being arrested and looped round a commutator hook (7). The wire extending from the hook is stretched beyond its elastic limit so that it tears at the hook after winding the first and last coils. In a preferred method, the wire is arrested and gripped at the beginning of the winding process by a clamping mechanism (13) which is moved from a wire catching position (15) to a first wire tearing position (16) and the armature is rotated to stretch the wire and cause it to sever at the commutator hook. The wire clamping mechanism then returns to its clamping position (15) until a second wire tearing step is to be performed at position (17). <IMAGE>
