Abstract

1380721 Ferrites IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 4988/71 Headings C1A and C1J Ferrites are prepared by co-precipitating metal carbonates from an aq. soln. of a soluble salt of iron and at least one other metal using an aq. soln. of ammonium carbonate and/or bicarbonate, ageing the slurry with agitation at a temperature of 20-50‹ C., separating and then heating the precipitate to form the ferrite. The metal may be Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni or Ba. An oxide of Zr, Cr, Cu, Mg, Si, Ba, Co, Al, Ni, Sr, V, Ca or Ti in an amount up to 0À5% by wt. may be present in the ferrite. The separated precipitate may be dried at 100-200‹ C. and then calcined at 800-1000‹ C. The dried precipitate may be treated with an aq. soln. of Zn(NO 3 ) 2 or Ti isopropoxide in butanol to increase the metal content of the ferrite. The calcined ferrite may be treated with a solution of polyvinyl alcohol, pelleted at 400-700 kg./sq. cm., granulated to 375-425 Á, pelleted at 1490-2500 kg./sq. cm. and then sintered at 1250‹ C. in a N 2 /O 2 atmosphere. The ferrite may have an initial permeability of 1247-4452.
