Abstract

A packing ring for use in gland packings for valve stems or shafts, primarily of ferrous material in water service, is formed by wrapping a circle or spiral of tape for example of graphite or asbestos, of which an end portion, which will form the bore of the packing, has an array of depressions or holes in which are carried particles of a corrosion inhibitor, such as zinc powder. The wrapped tape is compressed in a die whereby the zinc powder is encapsulated but still allowed to make contact with the valve stem or shaft.
