Abstract

Stirling cycle apparatus e.g. heat pump as shown includes a compressor 5 (or expander) for cyclically compressing (or expanding) a working gas, a displacer 7 for cyclically displacing the working gas, a rotatable shaft 2, and a drive mechanism including crank mechanisms 4, 8 respectively coupling the compressor (or expander) and the displacer to the shaft, the drive mechanism being such that the relative timing of their operating cycles can be altered. The compressor 5, having tangentially-arranged pistons, is dynamically balanced. <IMAGE>
