Abstract

A fuel injection pumping apparatus includes a delivery valve 19 located in a rotary distributor member 11, the valve being interposed between the outlet of an injection pump 10 and a plurality of outlet ports 17 to which fuel is delivered in turn at successive delivery stokes of the injection pump. Communication with the outlet ports is established through a delivery passage 16 and in order to minimise the stress on the spring 23 which biases the delivery valve to the closed position, a branch passage 28, 30 by-passing the valve is provided and, which opens to a given outlet port in advance of that outlet port's communication with the main delivery passage 16. As a result some fuel flows through the branch passage 28, 30 into the outlet port before the valve 19 opens. The size of the branch passage in relation to the outlet port is such that fuel will be gradually diverted by way of the delivery valve and the main delivery passage 16 during delivery of fuel. <IMAGE>
