Abstract
A process for the colouration of cellulose comprises treating cellulose with a dyestuff having a labile -SO3H group attached to a carbon atom of a nitrogen heterocyclic ring or the precursors for such a dyestuff and a material which can yield sulphite or bisulphite ions and heating the treated cellulose under neutral or acid conditions at a temperature of 130 DEG C or above to fix the dyestuff to the cellulose. This process provides a means of applying cellulose reactive dyes under neutral to acid conditions. It is especially valuable for colouring cellulose when it is desired to simultaneously apply disperse dyes, e.g. when colouring polyester/cellulose unions.
