Abstract

The invention provides an arrangement for changing toolholders, and hence tools, in a lathe having a work spindle (24), and a slide unit (28) to be equipped with at least one toolholder, the slide unit having at least one slide (30) movable parallel to the longitudinal axis of the work spindle. The arrangement includes a rotary magazine (46) for receiving a plurality of carriers (48) each having at least one mounting for a toolholder or tool. A hydraulic actuator 106 is provided to displace a selected carrier between a transfer position of the magazine and a clamping position (68) of the slide unit. Thus, the selected carrier, carrying a tool, can be moved from the magazine and clamped to the slide unit whereby the tool can be used to perform forming operations on a workpiece. Thereafter, the carrier can be returned to the magazine. <IMAGE>
