Abstract
A sensor system for detecting changes in ground elevation 12 comprising: a vehicle-mounted sensor 20 and a control means which receives signals from the sensor, analyses a series of components of the signals and issues a warning when a change of ground elevation (e.g. step 18 or ditch 16) is detected; wherein the sensor €™s response varies with direction such that it has an axis 22 in which the response is maximal; and this response axis is directed (with non-vertical angle θ) to intersect the ground behind or in front of the vehicle 10 such that the warning is issued before the vehicle reaches the change of ground elevation. Optionally a brake may be applied automatically so as to prevent the vehicle from moving towards the obstacle.
