Abstract

A method of separating an emulsion of oil, water and solid matter includes the steps of providing an emulsion of oil, water and solid matter; adding a solid to the emulsion in an amount of at least 50% of the oil by content by volume; adding a flocculent to the emulsion; filtering the mixture where filtering involves applying a first pressure to the mixture to force the water through the filter and applying a second pressure which is higher than the first to force oil through the filter.
