Abstract

A flue heat exchanger comprises a jacket for recovering heat from flue exhaust gases. Hot gases enter a central tube A from an appliance, such as a multi-fuel or wood burning appliance, and travel upwards. The gases are compressed under a compression cap I, and after compression, the gases travel into an exhaust channel C. The gases exit from the channel through an opening D once heat transfer has occurred. Heat is absorbed into a water jacket E from the exhaust channel and the central tube. Cold water enters the water jacket at an inlet F and hot water exits the water jacket at an outlet G. The water jacket may be formed from two tubular stainless steel walls with a narrow gap between them through which a thin film of water flows, simultaneously receiving exposure to heat at both sides. In use, cold water in the water jacket is designed to be subject to heat transfer from both the inner central tube carrying hot flue exhaust gases from the appliance, and also from the outer exhaust channel carrying flue exhaust gases redirected by the compression cap. Preferably, the compression cap is removable and comprises a heat resistant plug.
