Abstract

Apparatus for testing an internal combustion engine under load includes a swash plate pump 12 driven by the engine 10, the output of the pump being passed through a solenoid operated pressure control valve (14) to impose a hydraulic load on the pump. The setting of the valve is varied by an automatic control including a comparator 17 having one input connected to an engine torque sensor 13, a second input from a tachogenerator 20 via two filters 21,23 a differentiator 22 and a setting device 24, and an output connected to the valve 14 via an amplifier 16. A further motor driven motoring pump may be connected hydraulically to the first pump, to represent overrun conditions (Figures 2, 7 not shown). The tachogenerator may feed a mini-computer or microprocessor unit which is capable of being programmed to provide a static or controlled output representative of windage, friction load or torque (Figures 4,5, not shown). The pump may be mounted in bearings, an arm connected to the pump engaging a load cell for providing a signal representing engine torque (Figures 8, 9, not shown). <IMAGE>
