Abstract

A wave energy converter uses thrust from wave powered water vehicles connected by levers to a central tethered rotatable hub. The vehicles are free to move vertically with the waves and are fixed horizontally to allow continued rotation of the hub even when the central structure is not completely vertical. The hub may comprise a weighted base, a spool for the tethers, a buoyancy tank, electrical generating equipment and a gearbox. The hub is secured to the sea floor and is free to rotate about its axis until the tension in the tethers is offset by the displacement of the hub to maintain its vertical position at the surface as the tide changes.
