Abstract

A method of moulding a shaped article having a porous structure comprises introducing into a mould a paste comprising ordinary portland cement (OPC) 10-50wt%, OPC clinker 90-50wt% and water. Initial set is at a relatively low temperature (preferably ambient) with minimal water loss. Hardening to a green state allowing removal from the mould takes place in a second period at a relatively high temperature (preferably 30-60 degrees C) and at high humidity (preferably 70-100% RH) with minimal or no loss of water. A flexible plastics mould (preferably of LDPE) may be used to permit de-moulding. After the second hardening period the article may be removed from the mould and allowed to harden for a third hardening period at a higher temperature than for the first period and while maintaining its water content. It may then be water-soaked to remove fines and cure unreacted material. Alternatively, after the second hardening the article may be demoulded and subjected to combined hardening and soaking in water at a higher temperature than the first period. It may be dried at 70-120°C at 0.01 to 1bar for 2 to12 hours. The article may be used to preserve cooking oil during frying.
