Abstract

A method and circuit arrangement for starting and operating a gas discharge lamp (11) with preheatable electrodes from the direct voltage supply of a voltage converter 4 comprises in addition to a first current output from the voltage converter for supplying the gas discharge lamp, a second current output connected in parallel to the first output for supplying an additional heater current to the heater circuit of the gas discharge lamp only during the starting phase. The circuit arrangement includes rectifiers (8, 9) which are connected across the secondary windings (5.1, 5.2) of a transformer (5) and the outputs of which are connected in parallel to the gas discharge lamp (11). During starting, a bimetallic glow starter switch conducts the heater current and then opens to cause a high voltage starting pulse to be fed to the lamp. A temperature dependent resistor (13) reduces the output of the converter in the event of the lamp being short circuited. <IMAGE>
